Bridal Waltz's stunning upset over She's An Artist in Creswick Stake no surprise to Peter Moody

Bridal Waltz flipped the script on hot favourite She's An Artist to win the Listed AR Creswick Stakes (1200m) at Flemington Saturday. The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained filly led the field up and refused to wilt as She's An Artist chipped away late. Bridal Waltz finished third behind She's An Artist the start prior but could not be headed on Saturday as jockey Jamie Melham indicated a two-week turnaround potentially worked against the favourite. 'She went into that (last start) probably slightly underdone and was ready to peak today,' Moody said. 'Obviously respectful of the two that beat her comfortably the other day (She's An Artist and Fieldelo) but we thought we were in the wrong part of the track too. 'We were quietly confident we could turn it around, we just had to hope the favourite maybe wasn't as good as the hype.' Bridal Waltz 😲😲 The Melhams battled it out down the straight as odds-on favourite She's An Artist loomed to win for Jamie, but couldn't get past Bridal Waltz for Ben! You couldn't script it (and most punters didn't!) ðŸ'°ðŸ'ƒ @BMelham @moodyracingpgm â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) July 5, 2025 She's An Artist started $1.30 favourite but could not reel in $13 chance Bridal Waltz. Duchess Zou finished off nicely to grab third from Fieldelo. Moody said Bridal Waltz would be freshened up for early spring targets. 'We'll let the dust settle and then pick our mark carefully through the spring,' Moody said. 'We won't get too excited, Listed (today) if we could work on Group 3, Group 2, we know she can run down the Flemington straight. 'The Bobbie Lewis is a nice race where some other horses are maybe getting ready for bigger targets if you're ready for the day you can maybe sneak one of those.' Jockey Ben Melham controlled the race from the outset. 'We drew the right barrier to control the speed, I felt from that draw I'd be able to dictate the rest of the field,' Melham said. 'That was probably the difference, in saying that though, my filly dug really deep when I needed her to. 'I was able to control the race, control the speed, she's a fit horse, and let down too good for them in the end.' Melham joked about the potential repercussions of upstaging wife Jamie, the rider of She's An Artist. 'I'd be a fair chance of sleeping in the spare room, I'd imagine,' Melham laughed. Jamie Melham told stewards She's An Artist raced well but two weeks between runs blunted her finish being only a small filly.

Fieldelo aiming to upstage She's An Artist in Creswick Stakes at Flemington

Emerging Bendigo trainer Toby Lake is spoiling for an upset with Fieldelo in the Listed AR Creswick Stakes (1200m) on Saturday at Flemington. Last-start runner-up Fieldelo finished 3¾ lengths behind She's An Artist, the short-priced favourite to win the Creswick Stakes, but Lake is happy to be an underdog in the bid to flip the result. 'A few people seem to think the race has already been run and won,' Lake said. 'Hopefully, without that added pressure we can cause a bit of an upset.' She's An Artist, trained by Ciaron Maher, is the $1.55 favourite from Fieldelo ($4.60) and Soft Love ($7). Lake said the rise in distance from 1100m to 1200m and rain-affected soft track would help Fieldelo. 'We get a small swing in the weights (1kg better than last start) and I could expect to sit closer to it in the run,' Lake said. 'I think both fillies are open to improvement off the other day … both rising stars to some extent. 'We're getting to our right trip, third-up, we're going to be hopefully peaking on Saturday. 'Like I said to the owners, if there's a chink in the other filly's armour on the day hopefully we're the ones to get over her late.' Lake has obvious black-type ambitions for Fieldelo on Saturday and beyond. 'It's pretty clear she's a stakes filly in the making, it's just a matter of how you get there,' Lake said. Fieldelo has travelled nicely at the start and finish of her three starts to date, including a brilliant seven-length Bendigo romp, but hit flat spots mid-race on each occasion. 'I thought she was lost a little bit (last start at Flemington) when they joined the course proper, she hit a little flat spot but she was strong late,' Lake said. 'Gave me confidence to go again this Saturday, up in trip, thinking she'll be better suited at 1200m.' Lake said Fieldelo would not be drawn into a drag race with She's An Artist on Saturday. 'We still want to do the right thing by our horse,' Lake said. 'It's not the be all end all Saturday, as much as we'd like to win we don't want to go out and ride our filly any differently and do anything that could be detrimental to her chances. 'Tactics wise, I'm not sure, we'll have a good look at the race … the good thing about our filly is she's very tactically versatile, she's able to take a sit or she's able to lead, she's able to be back in the field. 'We're really looking forward to getting there.'

Mothers' group having a ‘fabulous time' with brilliant filly She's An Artist who returns to Flemington as Creswick Stakes favourite

She's An Artist has transformed a school mothers' social WhatsApp group chat into a resource for racing replays and insights as a cohort of largely first-time owners delight in their unbeaten filly. Sursum Corda, a 20-strong female syndicate, will be in full voice Saturday as She's An Artist returns to Flemington favourite to win the Listed AR Creswick Stakes (1200m). The flashy chestnut with striking baldy face roared to an emphatic victory at Headquarters last start. The brilliant performance followed a five-length Bendigo romp on debut. She's An Artist, trained by Ciaron Maher, has won her two starts to date by a combined 8¾ lengths and done so in electric time. Sursum Corda member Megan Burges has watched the Flemington replay 'probably 100 times'. 'We'll be there on Saturday making a lot of noise, I'd imagine, hopefully anyway,' Burges said. 'We had boys who finished school together two years ago, when we were getting towards the end of the school year we said wouldn't it be great to find a way to stay in touch. 'It was a bit of a joke at the start, I said 'why don't we buy into a racehorse' and then it got legs. 'We spoke to Louis (Le Meteyer of Astute Bloodstock) and the first horse he brought to us was She's An Artist … it's been a fabulous experience. 'The girls have gone from knowing literally nothing (about racing) to buying Best Bets and talking about sectionals and race planning, how the track is, is it going to dry out for Saturday et cetera. 'I got on a plane two weeks ago, so my phone was turned off for an hour, and when I turned it back on there was 27 unread WhatsApp messages. 'Every newsagency in the local area has now sold out of Best Bets.' Sursum Corda own a 20 per cent share in the filly. Astute Bloodstock purchased She's An Artist for $175,000 out of the 2023 Premier Yearling Sale. The Trapeze Artist filly showed early speed and promise but needed time to develop. Sydney-based managing owner Le Meteyer will be glued to a screen from Deauville, France on Saturday (AEST). 'I've actually got big FOMO (fear of missing out) not being there,' Le Meteyer said. 'I'll be watching … she's $1.60 favourite, the only thing I'm a little bit concerned with is the two week back-up, she's pulled up beautifully, worked really well. 'She's only little and the two weeks backup could be a bit testing for her, Ciaron wouldn't race her if she wasn't right and she's a filly with a lot of talent. 'The market says it's a one-horse race, I don't know about that, I've got a lot of respect for a couple of the others, but look, it's very exciting.' Le Meteyer has enjoyed great success with boutique Astute Bloodstock, Group 1 winners include Harlem and Amelia's Jewel, and loves sharing the ownership ride. 'When you see the joy a good horse can bring to people it's quite infatuating,' Le Meteyer said. 'There's probably a total of 30 owners in the horse and they're all having an amazing time. 'The banter and the chat, that's what racing is all about, the shared excitement and shared passion.'
